The Western Maryland Consortium is a regional workforce development agency with offices in each member county in western Maryland – Allegany, Garrett and Washington Counties.  The Consortium was formed through an agreement between the Boards of County Commissioners from each county in 1974 to provide workforce development services to residents in need of these services.  The mission of the Consortium is to provide informational, educational and job training services to unemployed or underemployed adults, youth and dislocated workers who are residents of western Maryland.  The workforce development services provided by the Consortium are funded under the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) and are intended to facilitate an individual’s entry into the workplace as rapidly as possible with the skills that will assure a wage that is greater than the self-sufficiency level for this area.  The provision of skill training is limited to demonstrated need and is aligned with the skill shortage occupations being experienced by local employers.

The Western Maryland Consortium is a partner agency in the One Stop Job Centers with the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation located in each western county.  The Consortium also partners closely with the community colleges, the public school systems, the Maryland Department of Rehabilitation Services (DORS) offices, the Departments of Social Services and a number of other state, local and non-profit agencies that are engaged in the provision of human services.  These partnerships form a network of providers to assist individuals with a variety of needs.
